1 Corinthians

Deadly Divisions- 1:10-13a

When we look into the Corinthian church with open eyes, we will see ourselves sitting in the pews,
with all our bad behavior and disgraceful divisions hanging all over us like a cheap suit.
When the commitment to and the compassion of Christ are sacrificed on the altar of self-interest,
then and there, the church begins to crumble from within!
Apparently, the Corinthian Christians had developed a severe case of self-interest.
So, out of love and concern for their survival as a church, Paul admonished them:
"Be in agreement... have no divisions among you... be united in the same mind
and the same purpose
."
When we read Paul's words and acknowledge the reality of the contemporary church,
the question stares at us: "What are we, individually, going to do about the
deadly divisions in our churches?
" . ...

Jesus Christ And Him Crucified -- 2:2 -- Sermon by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

You never know what the next news bulletin is going to bring forth.
It is a world which is in a state of collapse in almost every respect.
It is a time of great trouble and perplexity.
And the great question that arises is this: Has the Christian Church anything to say at such a time?
What has she got to say?
What is the greatest need of the world tonight?
What is the greatest need of every one of us, of every single human being?
Now it is because I feel that the great Apostle here in these words deals with and answers those
very questions that I am calling attention to this great announcement, this great proclamation
by the Apostle.
You notice that he says that he determined not to know anything among them
save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. ...

God Gives Growth- 3:1-7

A seed may never grow because it is not planted in the right soil with the right conditions
of sunshine and rain.
So, our spiritual lives may not grow because they lack the essential conditions.
God speaks to us through the Bible and in his Son.
Just as the seed must respond to the soil if it is to germinate and grow, so our souls
must respond to God if they are to develop in Christlikeness. ...

Lord's Supper Insights- 11:23-30

If we think of Jesus Christ our faith is nourished, our hope is kindled, and our strength is renewed.
Our modern way of thinking of "memory" almost presupposes a sense of absence,
while the ancient Hebrew concept of "memory" presupposes a sense of presence.
That sense of presence is not a crude literalistic concept, but a realistic spiritual presence.
More is meant than a psychological stimulant or a kind of memory-quickener.
The Lord's Supper was instituted for the purpose of keeping ever before us the meaning
of the death of Jesus, and of bringing us into a Holy of Holies where we can come
into His presence. ...

Christian, You Are Gifted- 12:1

Spiritual gifts are supernatural.
They are not just glorified natural abilities.
They are not something you get by study, practice, or inheritance.
They are charismatic gifts, grace gifts, given solely by God.
If you are a Christian, you are in the true sense of the term -- a charismatic Christian,
because you have a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual gifts are supernatural endowments, which enable us to carry out
God's work in God's way. ...

Easter - The Gospel- 15:3-4

Of all the events of history no event is more tremendous than the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Without Christ's resurrection His crucifixion would have been in vain.
You and I would have been without hope.
These two fundamental facts cannot be separated.
Christ's cross, proposed from all eternity and prophesied through the ages,
found its compliment in the empty tomb....

People grow old when they allow their hearts be covered with the snows of pessimism
and the ice of cynicism. ( Five emotional cancers: comparing, competing, criticizing,
complaining, and contention)
Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
The way to keep young is to keep our faith young, our self-confidence young,

The Greatest Giver- 11:9

It's Christmas again.
It's the time to give and receive gifts.

God's Sufficient Grace- 12:9

It is often true with Christians that we must be laid low before we will look high.
Whenever God sends a trial with one hand, He gives grace with the other.
This is how trials become triumphs.
The very things which seem to break us are the things which really make us.
"My grace is sufficient for thee." ...

Galatians

Living With God - Galatians 2:20

In The Fullness Of Time- 4:1-7

Verse 4 says, "When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman."
That's an amazing statement!
Have you ever considered that there was a right time for Jesus to be born?
There was one time in all of history when all things were perfectly right for Jesus to be born.
Jesus came at precisely the right time.
Christmas reminds us of God's perfect timing.
Just as God's timing was perfect in the coming of Jesus,
His timing is perfect in your life.
Just as the people of Jesus' day didn't understand God's timing then,
you may not understand it now, nonetheless, it is perfect timing. ...

The Right Time- 4:1-7

What are you waiting for?
Maybe you are waiting for relief from financial troubles.
Maybe you are waiting for help in family matters.
Maybe you are waiting a miracle of healing.
How many of you are waiting to meet God?
When is the right time to meet God?
When is it time to have the deepest needs of our restless human hearts met by God?
If you have never met God personally -- the right time is now! ...

True Spirituality- 6:1-5

In Galatians, Paul describes true Christian spiritually.
The Judaisers had said, "To be true Christians you have to be like us:
You have to be circumcised and you have to obey the Jewish law
."
Paul explained that wasn't the essence of Christian spiritually.
Prim and proper is not the way Paul describes spiritually.
Galatians 5:25: "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."
That describes true spirituality.
It is keeping in step with the Holy Spirit.
This means following the leadership of the Spirit in our hearts, and not following the demands
of our old sinful nature. ...

6:1-10 - Father, I’d Rather Not Do It At All

Don't Give Up- 6:9

Great churches and great pastors are not made in softness, but in challenge and response
to that challenge.
God knows that strong men and women can not develop in easy places.
People who have never had their faith tested do not know whether they have faith.
God wants to make us to be like Christ, and He allows us to stay in hard places to make us better.
James tells us we should be happy, when different kinds of trials and troubles
come our way because these are the means of developing in us
the strength of character that is a necessary part of Christian maturity. (James 1:2-4)
Pressure produces patience, and patience leads to perfection.
When carbon is under the tremendous pressure of tons of earth, a beautiful diamond is produced.
So, God allows our character to be formed under the pressure of our circumstances. ...

Ephesians

It's Ours In Christ- 1:1-3

You have inherent worth... you and I were created in the image of God.
Jesus said, "Your soul is worth more than the whole world."
God sent Christ to die for our sins – yours – mine!
You and I do not earn salvation. We cannot earn it!
But we cried out: "Lord, save us!"
And He did!
Because of that we are "in Christ".
So, what Christ has, we have!
We are "fellow heirs" with Him. (Romans 8: 17)
He calls us brothers and sisters. (Hebrews 2: 11)
What Christ possesses, we possess – an inheritance that is imperishable and undefiled
and will not fade away, reserved for us in heaven. (1 Peter 1: 4)
God has "Blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ."
(Ephesians 1: 3) ...

Spiritual Blessings In Christ- 1:3

So, a "spiritual blessing" would refer to the spirit of man meaning that which is inward.
The blessings are spiritual not merely because they pertain to the soul,
but because they are derived from the Holy Spirit.
These blessings come from God through the Spirit.
But the point in view is what they are, not how they reach us.
The expression "spiritual blessing" is a comprehensive one, covering all the good
that comes to us by grace.
So we have a balance.
On the one hand, the kind of blessings which are Spirit-produced,
and on the other hand, the source of these blessings which is the Holy Spirit. ...

Heavenly Places In Christ- 1:3

The kingdom of the heavens, which was an expression of Matthew, is established here on earth
and is heavenly throughout and is not of this world. (John 18:36)
It is the threshold of the kingdom of glory and is located wherever God's grace has sway.
So the phrase does not refer to a physical locality.
It refers to a celestial region.
It is a sphere of spiritual activities to which the believer has been lifted in Christ.
It is not the heaven of the future but the heaven which lies even now within
and around the Christian.
Believers really do belong to two worlds. (Philippians 3:20)
Temporarily we belong to the earth, but spiritually our lives are linked with Christ's.
We belong to the heavenly realm. ...

Self Image We Need
Ephesians 1:8

Sealed And Secure- 1:13-14

We can say that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
We have been identified as God's own possession.
We are protected by His authority.
We are secured by the down payment of His Holy Spirit who lives in us,
and who is the guarantee that God will give us a new body and receive us into heaven.
Then we will be totally redeemed. ...

You Were Dead- 2:1

What is death?
It is the exact opposite of that.
God is the author of life.
He, "who alone hath life and immortality," is the source of life.
He is the sustainer of life.
God is life and gives life, and apart from God there is no life. ...

You Hath He Quickened - 2:3-5

"Quickened together with Christ."
"Quickened" means to make alive - to impart life.
In the New Testament it almost always is used of the communication of the life of which
Christ is the author.
"He quickened us together with Christ."
He united us with Christ.
He raised us up with Christ.
He has made us to sit with Christ.
If the fact that God could love unlovely sinners was wonderful,
the fact that Christ would die for them, rise, and live with them, is equally wonderful.
It is incredible! ...

It Is By Grace- 2:8

The exact and discriminate meaning of the word grace should be crystal clear to every child of God.
When used in the Bible to set forth the grace of God in the salvation of sinners,
the word, "grace," discloses not only the boundless goodness and kindness of God toward men,
it reaches far beyond and indicates the supreme motive which actuated God in the creation ,
preservation, and consummation of the universe.

What greater fact could be expressed by one word: "grace."
Grace includes mercy for the undeserving and unmerciful.
It includes help for the helpless and the hopeless.
It includes redemption for the renegade and the repulsive.
It includes love for the unlovely.
All of this is in full measure and overflowing abundance because of nothing in us,
but because of everything in the Giver, God Himself. ...

Saved- 2:8

We only want to be saved when we are in danger.
It is not pleasant to think that we are in danger.
We placate ourselves that everything is fine.
It is not going to happen to us.
It is only going to happen to that other person.
Yet, outside of Christ and in the sight of God, we are in a terrible danger of death.
There are dangers to be saved from. ...

Salvation Through Faith- 2:8

In this passage Paul is reminding us that salvation is wholly and entirely a work of God.
He emphasizes this even more by adding the phrases:
"And that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast."
(Eph. 2:8-9)
The source and origin of salvation is not in us; it is wholly and only in God.
As sure as a dead man can do nothing toward making himself alive,
so there is no way the spiritually dead can make any contribution toward obtaining spiritual life.
Self cannot save self.
God does not ask that unwilling self become willing self because it cannot.
God asks nothing from us because there is nothing we can give or do.
Salvation is "not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." ...

What Makes A Church Great? - 2:10

Since the church today is receiving so much recognition, both positively and negatively,
it is imperative that the nature of the church be understood.
The church means many things to many people.
The history of the church has been hampered by the failure of the multitudes to understand
its heritage and its destiny.
No victory has been won when the multitudes come, unless their lives have been changed
to conform to Jesus Christ.
It is always a temptation, even for the church, to judge the significance of a movement
by the numbers involved in it.
This is not to imply that numbers are unimportant.
It is to emphasize that the use of numbers is a false criteria.
Spiritual significance is never judged primarily by quantity but by quality.
By quality, I mean commitment.
Remember, our Lord said in Luke 17: 20: "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs
to be observed
" -- that is, by statistics.
We must remember that the church is God's doing!
It was conceived, established, empowered, and commissioned by His grace. ...

The Household Of God- 2:19

The church is a family.
It is a family that God has put together.
It is a large family with one Father.
We have been adopted into the family of God.
As a believer, we have become a member of the body of Christ, and we now rest
ourselves upon Jesus.
We are one with other Christians, and we are no longer alone.
God has placed us together.
We must keep in mind that, as imperfect as it is, it is the Church in any given community
that God has brought together for the purpose of serving Him. ...

Gifted By Grace- 3:1

Paul had been entrusted with an understanding of the grace of God which he was to share
with other believers.
Those of us who have this wonderful, good news have a responsibility to pray for others
and to tell others of God's grace.
You have something to do.
You have something to say.
You have something to show.
You have something to suffer.
You have something to give that no one else has.
The assignment you have from God is specific.
Each believer has a task that is uniquely his.
God reveals to each individual believer his specific responsibility. ...

The Great Mystery -- Ephesians 3:1-13

Spirit Gifts- 3:2

As we grasp Paul's teaching, we realize that each gift is given in order that it will be profitable
to the body.
Each spiritual gift presented to the body is within the life of a Christian.
Each new Christian added to a body will provide a needed gift for it to function.
When God wants the church to be taught,
He will provide, by His sovereign act, a person with the gift of teaching.
His gift belongs to the congregation.
A member of the body who does not possess the gift of teaching should never be asked to do so.
The number of teachers God has added to a local congregation will always be the exact number
necessary for the body to function.
The church is asking for trouble when it decides through committees
that it needs "X" number of classes, and then tries to find enough warm bodies
to fill the classes with teachers.
Do you not think it would be better to have one or two or three large groups taught by
a gifted teacher, than 10 or 20 or 30 groups being bored by "feet" trying to function as "hands?"
...

We Are Privileged- 3:2-13

The keyword is privilege, and it unlocks the door to happiness.
Parents would be happier if, instead of complaining about all that they have to sacrifice
for their children, they realized how privileged they are to have children and to be entrusted
with their upbringing for a few years.
More young people would enjoy school if they stopped regarding education as their obligation,
and saw it as a privilege that doesn't come to everybody in today's world.
We can extend the list to include the privileges of freedom, democracy, and affluence.
Here is a prescription for happiness!
Take life for gratitude, not for granted.
Thank God for the privilege of being alive.
You rarely hear the word, privilege, around a church.
You hear of the words like beauty, responsibility, obligation, sacrifice, sometimes spoken
in a virtuous and even martyred tone of voice, but rarely the word, privilege.
In a nominal Christian society it is no particular privilege to belong to the church of our Lord.
More likely, it imposes on the Christian burdens that he would sometimes rather do without.
Perhaps, that explains why so many nominal Christians find no happiness in their religion. ...

Our Real Riches -- 3:14-21

A Spirit Filled Life - 3:19-21

Four Great Truths- 3:19

God is sure to lead you into service the moment your life is filled with Him.
It is one thing to work for God; it is another thing to have God work through us.
Our absolute surrender gives God the chance to work his perfect will through us
God has a plan for your life. (Ephesians 2:10)
The tragedy of the hour is that very few believers are living their lives in the center
of the sweet, beloved will of God.
They have planned their own lives.
The Spirit-filled believer has the joy of living the life that has been planned for him by the Father,
and of knowing His constant enabling.
Now, you are in cooperation with the Holy Spirit!
God wants to use you now!
God will use you, but it will be in His way and in His time. ...

Discouraging Word -- Ephesians 4:29

What shall the pastor do when he is criticized?
Don't!
Don't criticize the critics.
This will only cause more attention and may trap the pastor into saying what should not be said.
Don't say anything about the criticism in sermons or in any other public gathering.
It is always tempting for the criticized pastor to use the power of the pulpit
to get back at the critics or to gain sympathy from other people in the congregation.
The pastor has an advantage from the pulpit during a conflict.
It is unfair to use that advantage in this manner.
The pastor must remember that visitors are often in the congregation.
What an impression this makes on visitors.
People have come to hear the Word of God – not the problems of a pastor. ...

Children, Obey Your Parents - 6:1-3

Why should children obey their parents?
Obedience to parents is an obedience to God.
It is in the home that we learn how to respond to authority and unconditional love.
The honor we owe to God is learned at home.
We must learn what it means to honor.
The word used here for honor is "timao,"which means "to place value on something."
To honor is to esteem and value.
How much are your parents worth?
That is how much you honor them. ...

Fathers Of Faith - 6:1-4

Fathers must accept the fact that the family becomes one of deep spiritual values
through meditation and solitude with God and each other, only as the father leads it to do so.

and gather their families together for spiritual renewal. ...

He and He Alone-- 1:21

"For to me to live [or living] is Christ." - Phil. 1:21
In these words we are surely brought face to face with the most important questions that can
ever confront us.
What is life? What is living? What does it mean to us? What is it all about?
Is it not one of the major tragedies of life, indeed, is it not the greatest of all tragedies,
that amid all our concerns about life, all our intellectual activity, all our discussions,
the one thing which men and women are never concerned to face is the first and most obvious
thing of all, namely life itself, and living. ...

who are crooked and stubborn. (Philippians 2: 15b,TLB)
That is the church!

This is what the world needs most!

Do we have the right to say to the depressed, "Be of good cheer!"?

Effective Christian Leadership - 1:24-29

Effective Christian Leaders are those who look beyond attendance figures.
They look beyond today.
They want to develop people, not just produce events.
They want to see people grow up -- not just show up.
Do you see this in Paul's words?
Paul understands that His first goal is to reach people with the Gospel, and then develop them
in their Christian life.
The world can do as well as the church (entertain, sing, counsel, draw crowds, build buildings),
but there is only one thing the church can do that the world cannot . . .
we can present to them Jesus who will give them life eternal.
That's our mission. ...

Strive For Christian Maturity- 1:28-29

The most pressing need of our day is maturity.
Very immature people are attempting to handle very mature problems.
The gap between the maturity of our problems and of our powers
and the immaturity of too many people is the most serious gap in human existence today.
Unless that gap can be filled, we will suffer from frustrations which may prove fatal.
For we have the awful power to ruin ourselves.
How can I be a mature person in my situations, my problems,
and deal with my possibilities in a mature way?
That attitude will enable us to proceed to find for ourselves
the most necessary thing that the business of living demands -- maturity.
Reaching maturity is a must. ...

What More Could You Want? - 2:6-7

What dissatisfied Christians think to discover in the various extremes and tangential sects,
exists already for them in the gospel they have received from Christ, if only, they had been
properly instructed, and led to comprehend the length and breadth, the height and depth,
of Christian salvation.
The sure antidote to all the misrepresentations, exaggerations, and perversions of the gospel
that clutter Christiendom, is to be "rooted... built up... established" in Christ, just as we were taught.
That is Paul's point!

Look at life as a new creature of Jesus Christ!
No matter what happens to us in this life -- good or bad,
Christ promises that He will be with us.
He is transforming all that happens to us into His wonderful purpose for our lives.
In the Disney animated classics, "Peter Pan," there is a scene where Peter comes into
the children's bedroom, and they ask him, how to fly.
And Peter says,
"Think wonderful, lovely thoughts and they will lift you up into the air."
That sounds great, but it is fantasy!
God is not into fantasy.
God is into reality.
God is into raising people from the dead.
But, I can tell you this -- one day, we will fly!
We'll fly away! ...

An United Fellowship- 3:9-17

What united the early New Testament church into a fellowship which overflowed,
can unite our church today.
The dynamic unity of that early church was not that the people looked alike;
acted alike, or even thought alike: it was that the people loved alike;
they loved the Lord Jesus Christ; therefore, they could love one another.
They had an uncommon allegiance to their uncommon Lord;
therefore, they had a loving and uplifting allegiance to the Lord's church. ...
